NAME DROPPER
As usual, the Emmy nominations (announced last Thursday) ignored some of the year's best work. If Outtakes had a ballot:
Drama, best: Showtime's “The Tudors,” recognition denied for Jonathan Rhys Meyers' erratic King Henry VIII, Jeremy Northam's doomed Sir Thomas More and Nick Dunning as Anne Boleyn's scheming father.
Comedy, best: The CW's “Everybody Hates Chris,” funny and family-oriented with the bite of creator/narrator Chris Rock.
Actor, drama: Jesse L. Martin, leaving “Law & Order” after nine seasons, deserving acknowledgment for his body of work as savvy detective Ed Green.
Supporting actor, drama: Blair Underwood, Navy pilot with complex issues, HBO's “In Treatment,” and Michael K. Williams, scarred and soulful hoodlum with a morality all his own, HBO's criminally neglected “The Wire.”
Supporting actress, drama: Mia Wasikowska, teenager with adult problems, HBO's “In Treatment,” and Annabeth Gish, troubled spouse of an ambitious Rhode Island politician, Showtime's “Brotherhood.”
Supporting actor, comedy: Rhys Darby, nutzy New Zealander who plays Murray, hapless manager of rock duo Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, HBO's “Flight of the Conchords.”
Supporting actress, comedy: Tichina Arnold, tough and tender mom, The CW's “Everybody Hates Chris.”
WORD PLAY
“Why can't we invade a country with chicks in bikinis?” Marine taking in a barren desert landscape on the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, HBO's “Generation Kill.”
“You can only manage what you got,” Channel 4 San Diego's Matt Vasgersian, taking a shot at Padres players and letting manager Bud Black off the hook as the team crumbles, losing to Atlanta, 12-3.
“I'm from Manhattan, I'm not the outdoor type,” David, the doctor, forced to sleep in a doghouse with pal Elvis, a Jack Russell terrier, CBS' “Greatest American Dog.” Aside: Meshugah Dave gave his dog a $10,000 “Bark Mitzvah.”
'MISS' MATCH
On NBC's “Miss Universe Pageant,” winner Dayana Mendoza, Miss Venezuela, was asked a judge's “final question” about whom she thought had it easier in life, women or men.
Answer: “God made us to share and have differences. Men think that the faster way to go to a point is to go straight. Women know that the faster way to go to a point is to go to the curves.” Was that an answer?
Didn't matter, Mendoza won anyway, beating the contestant who should've been crowned, fourth runner-up Elisa Nájera, a coherent Miss Mexico.
ANGLE, LOCAL
On Showtime's “Weeds,” Nancy Botwin (ever-surprising, Emmy nominated Mary-Louise Parker) is in cahoots with a drug honcho named Guillermo (menacing Guillermo Díaz, a bright addition to the cast) and, as a front, gets a job running a store at an outlet center near the border. It's called San Ysidro Maternity World.
