MORNING SURF
3 radio stations up for Marconi awards

UNION-TRIBUNE

July 23, 2008

Many tidbits from the world of local broadcasting:

Three San Diego radio stations are finalists in the National Association of Broadcasters' Marconi Radio Awards. Noncommercial jazz station Jazz 88 (KSDS/88.3 FM) is a finalist for large-market station of the year, alternative station FM 94.9 (KBZT/94.9 FM) is a finalist in the rock-station category, and KSON-FM (97.3 and 92.1 FM) is a finalist for country station of the year. The winners will be announced Sept. 18.

More newscasters have been added to KSWB's Fox 5 News, which debuts Aug. 1. Former HGTV and CNN anchor Kendis Gibson will join Kathleen Bade as the weeknight co-anchor of “Fox 5 News at Ten”; Raoul Martinez from WESH-TV in Orlando will co-anchor “Fox 5 Morning News” with Arthel Neville; and Walter Makula will co-anchor the weekend edition of “Fox 5 News at Ten” with Susan Lennon. Makula most recently worked as an anchor and a reporter for KHNL-TV in Honolulu.

Locally owned adult-alternative station KPRI is changing its lineup. Oz Medina, formerly of 91X and KBCO in Denver, will take the 5:30 to 10 a.m. weekday shift. Former morning man Madison will move to the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. slot. Meg Banta will take the 7 to midnight shift, and she will also add a Saturday edition of her popular “Sunday Morning Unplugged” acoustic show. The unplugged shows will air 7 to 11 a.m.

There have been some management appointments at KGTV/Channel 10 and McGraw Hill Broadcasting. Darrell K. Brown is the new president of McGraw Hill Broadcasting, which includes KGTV. He replaces Edward J. Quinn, who is retiring. Beginning Aug. 4, Jeffrey Block will be the new vice president and general manager of KGTV and Azteca America, the station's Spanish-language affiliate.

KFMB-TV/Channel 8 anchor Stan Miller is on leave through Aug. 28. There is no word yet on whether he will return to the station or move on.
