THE PROBLEM: Just Fix It gets many requests from frustrated residents about overgrown trees. Today, we focus on five, beginning with the most dangerous.
Tree roots on Del Mar Avenue between Ebers and Froude streets in Ocean Beach have reached the middle of the street, giving traffic heading downhill toward the ocean quite a bounce.

The Site: Del Mar Avenue near Froude Street in San Diego's Ocean Beach

After a cyclist took a nasty fall in November, Daniel Meyer called his councilman, Kevin Faulconer. Faulconer's office contacted the Street Division but nothing happened.
Oscar Ferrer told us a tree in front of his home on Lotus Street near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard in Ocean Beach is overgrown and uprooting the sidewalk. Pam Miller said she called the city two years ago about an unkempt palm and another tree with heavy branches hanging in her yard on Tourmaline Street near Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach.
Genevieve Hunt said a large branch from a towering eucalyptus tree in an undeveloped area next to her home on C Street near Edgemont Street in Golden Hill fell and nearly hit her, and another broke a handrail on a home next door. Hunt said she was told two years ago the tree would be trimmed.
Rae Thompson has waited more than a year for a palm on Regner Road near Jackie Drive in San Carlos to be trimmed. Someone painted an “X” on the tree but it's still shaggy.
STATUS: It took weeks to get answers from Drew Potocki, the city's urban forester. Here is what we learned:
Road repairs will be made on Del Mar within 30 days. The tree on Lotus was trimmed and the sidewalk will be repaired during the fiscal year beginning July 1, and the trees on Tourmaline will be trimmed within 30 days.
The city said the trees on C and Regner do not need trimming, although fronds that fell onto Regner were removed. Potocki doesn't know who put the “X” on the palm tree. He said Hunt and Thompson can apply for a no-fee permit to trim the trees on their own.
WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Drew Potocki can be reached at (619) 527-5486 or dpotocki@sandiego.gov. Requests for tree trimming should be reported at (619) 527-7500 or online at apps.sandiego.gov/streetdiv.
