Roundabout-wanting Ocean Beach resident takes her activism to the street

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

June 11, 2008

THE PROBLEM: Heather Clark created a makeshift roundabout in an oddly shaped intersection that she said is a traffic hazard near her home in Ocean Beach .

She'd like the city of San Diego to build a permanent roundabout.

THE SITE: Green, Froude and Seaside streets in Ocean Beach
Froude and Seaside streets meet with Greene Street, and in between is a large, rectangular-shaped no-man's land. Neighbors believe the area was once a streetcar stop.

There are two stop signs, one on Greene at Froude and another on Greene at Seaside. Traffic on Froude and Seaside do not have stops, so vehicles often speed around the corner.

“It's very dangerous,” said Clark, an art student at University of California San Diego.

Clark is just beginning her effort to get a roundabout but said people have already asked for two more stop signs or speed bumps.

Clark secured permits from various city departments, including Fire and Risk Management, to create a roundabout last Wednesday evening and invited neighbors to join her. She rented 30 sawhorses, eight road closure signs and safety vests for people to wear.

Although the night was chilly and drizzly, dozens of people joined Clark in the middle of the roundabout to play badminton, while cars maneuvered around them. Fourteen neighbors signed up to help her. The city has a series of roundabouts along La Jolla Boulevard.

STATUS: Senior traffic engineer Julio Fuentes said engineers looked at the site Monday. “It's an odd area,” he said.

After looking at accident records and any history of past complaints, engineers will decide whether something needs to be done to improve traffic circulation, Fuentes said. The investigation could take up to two months.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Julio Fuentes, who can be reached at (619) 533-3092 or jfuentes@sandiego.gov. Requests for help should go to (619) 533-3126 or sandiego.gov/engineering-cip/services/public/request.shtml.

IT'S FIXED: City Street Division workers Friday ground down a section of Del Mar Avenue in Ocean Beach where tree roots grew into the middle of the street.

As we wrote last month, the raised section between Ebers and Froude streets gave motorists and bicyclists headed toward the ocean quite a jolt.

WHO GOT IT DONE: Hasan Yousef, the city Street Division's deputy director, who can be reached at (619) 527-7504 or hyousef@sandiego.gov.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem government hasn't fixed despite your complaints? Whether it's a missing bus bench or an unkempt park anywhere in San Diego County, Just Fix It might be able to help.
