Work continues at Chollas Creek to clear reeds, replace with native plants

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

June 13, 2008

IT'S GETTING FIXED: When Just Fix It visited Chollas Creek behind San Diego's Southcrest Recreation Center two months ago, we looked out on a sea of towering arundo reeds. But no more.

THE SITE: Chollas Creek in San Diego's Southcrest neighborhood

The Urban Corps started clearing thick reeds up to 25 feet tall at National Avenue and continued past the foot bridge near the recreation center.

Liz Faddis, executive director of Groundwork San Diego Chollas Creek, said work will continue west until about 40th Street and should be done by the end of the month.

Resident Jason Hennick contacted us after a fire broke out in the reeds, apparently started by a campfire.

Once the reeds and other non-native plants are chopped down, they will be trucked away, along with shopping carts, tires and other trash. An herbicide that can be used in a creek bed will be used to keep the reeds from growing back.

Faddis is seeking a permit to plant native vegetation along the creek. She hopes students at Cesar Chavez Elementary School in Southcrest can help tend the native plants this fall.

WHO'S GETTING IT FIXED: The Urban Corps is doing the work. Groundwork is coordinating the cleanup with a grant from the city of San Diego. To find out more about Groundwork, contact Liz Faddis at (619) 543-0430 or go to groundworksandiego.org.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem that government hasn't fixed despite your complaints? Whether it's a missing bus bench or an unkempt park anywhere in San Diego County, Just Fix It might be able to help.

Complaint forms are at justfixit.uniontrib.com, or call (800) 820-8714.
