Sex offender sentenced to 1,330-year sentence

MURRIETA – A 44-year-old convicted sex offender was sentenced to more than a millenium in prison Monday.

Horace Mann Williams was convicted in February of 11 felony counts of lewd acts upon a child under 14 and one count of digital penetration of a child under 14, along with a sentence-enhancing allegation of multiple victims. He molested three girls between 1999 and 2005.

Monday, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Sherrill Ellsworth handed down a 1,330-year sentence for Williams, but not before Williams delivered a long diatribe against the court and his attorney.

“You guys are full of it,” said an emotional Williams, who broke down and cried during his statement.

“This isn't justice,” he said.

Williams claimed his lawyer, Dario Bejarano Jr., did a poor job of representing him. Though he was allowed to have another lawyer, the judge would not grant the defendant a new trial.

The defendant claims that during a period when he was supposedly molesting one of the victims, he was in prison. He also alleged juror misconduct, stating that a potential panelist had made a prejudicial statement before being selected for his trial.

Williams also said he had wanted to testify but had wanted to be granted a new lawyer first and then was railroaded because Bejarano informed the judge his client was not interested in testifying.

Williams said the trust between him and his lawyer had been broken during the trial and he thought he should have been allowed to speak with another lawyer before making a decision to testify.

During his statement, Williams disparagingly referred to the “good ol' boy routine here in Riverside.”

Williams said that when his case was set to go to Riverside, Bejarano asked that it be held in Ellsworth's department in Murrieta because the lawyer said Ellsworth favored him.

“I see where the favoritism comes from,” Ellsworth said.

“I really think it's absurd the way that this court is doing, has done and continually does this trial,” Williams said.

Williams said Bejarano never spoke with him in the jail and never spoke with his wife or his very last witness for the defense.

“I do not want some incompetent person representing me,” Williams said.

According to Riverside County Chief Probation Officer Alan M. Crogan, the defendant, “exercised criminal sophistication and planning, in that the acts occurred over an extended period of time, included two victims, and occurred when the victims' parents were not present. Based on the victims' ages at the time of the offenses, and the defendant's role as their tutor, it appears the victims were vulnerable.”

The judge had nothing to say following Williams' statement, other than to list the time she was giving for each charge and advised his new lawyer to advise him of his right to appeal.

“I will be filing an appeal,” an angry Williams said.

Williams spent six years in prison for molestation in the early 1990s.
