MORENO VALLEY – A man who allegedly robbed a Moreno Valley store was fatally shot by a Riverside County sheriff's deputy during a confrontation at the end of a pursuit, the sheriff's department reported.
Around 2:25 a.m., deputies responded to reports of an armed robbery in progress at an am/pm mini-mart at 23145 Hemlock Ave., just west of Graham Street, according to Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela.
Deputies arrived at the scene within two minutes, just as the suspect, whose identity was not immediately released, was making his getaway, Valenzuela said.
She said the man fled the location and led deputies on a one-block pursuit westbound, abandoning his vehicle in the 12100 block of Calle Sombra.
A foot chase ensued, ending seconds later outside the La Pacifica Apartments at 23400 Hemlock, where the suspect “refused to follow the (deputies') commands” to surrender, “resulting in the officer-involved shooting with the suspect being fatally shot,” Valenzuela said.
The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the sheriff's homicide unit, which is standard practice in an officer-involved shooting, according to Valenzuela.
