RIVERSIDE – A 46-year-old convicted sex offender who flew from New York to Southern California expecting to meet a 13-year-old Moreno Valley girl for sex – only to find out the girl was actually a police decoy –pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges.
Douglas William Evert of Dover Plains, N.Y., pleaded guilty to one count of using the Internet to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity and a separate offense of committing the crime while being required to be registered as a sex offender, according to U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Thom Mrozek.
U.S. District Judge Virginia A. Phillips scheduled sentencing for Oct. 20 in Riverside.
According to Mrozek, Evert faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
Evert was arrested April 21 at a fast-food restaurant on Pigeon Pass Road in Moreno Valley, where he thought he was meeting a girl named “Allison,” with whom he had communicated via the Internet about arranging a sexual encounter, Mrozek said.
Members of the Riverside County Sexual Predator Internet Decoy Enforcement-Riverside team, also known as SPIDER and comprised of sheriff's and District Attorney's Office personnel, became aware of Evert in late March when he posted messages on a MySpace.com bulletin board called “Older Men/Younger Girls,” Mrozek said.
A SPIDER decoy using the handle “Allison” responded to the defendant, identifying herself as a 13-year-old girl, according to an affidavit filed in support of the criminal complaint.
Evert and the decoy chatted online about “sex and the possibility of meeting in person to engage in sex,” said Mrozek.
Evert followed through with a proposed rendezvous, flying into Los Angeles International Airport and then driving on to Moreno Valley – where he was met by federal agents, according to Mrozek.
He said New York state records showed Evert was convicted in 1991 for sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl and was sentenced to 40 days in jail, as well as five years probation.
