Suspect shot after police chase dies

ASSOCIATED PRESS

5:53 a.m. July 22, 2008

OAKLAND – One of two men shot by Oakland police officers after a chase over the weekend has died.

San Leandro police say 21-year-old Lesly Xaxier Allen died Monday after being shot at the end of the pursuit Saturday night that began in Oakland and ended in San Leandro.

The chase began when officers tried to pull a car over driven by 21-year-old Vernon Dunbar.

After Dunbar crashed his car into the side of a patrol car, officers opened fire when they say Allen reached under a seat. Police say they later recovered a handgun.

Dunbar was treated for his wounds, then booked on suspicion of suspicion of six felonies.

The officers involved have been placed on routine administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
