SAN DIEGO – Four additional passenger vehicle lanes are being added at the busy Otay Mesa border crossing Sunday evening to relieve northbound traffic jams.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection will test opening the port's cargo lanes for passenger cars between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. The cargo lanes shut down to big rigs at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Spokesman Vincent Bond says it's possible the expanded entry lanes could be made permanent.
A similar test was conducted May 18, but only 300 vehicles were processed.
The test is designed to relieve the long wait times along the U.S.-Mexico border.
