VENTURA – Strawberries and nursery stock helped Ventura County agriculture overcome last year's winter freeze for nearly $1.55 billion in earnings.
Retiring Agricultural Commissioner W. Earl McPhail released the 2007 crop report Wednesday, showing the gross value was up nearly $42 million from 2006.
Strawberries remained Ventura County's top crop with a value of $366 million, the same as 2006.
The freeze took a toll on fruit and nut crops, cut flowers and field crops.
But McPhail says “strawberries hung in there” and nursery stock increased $29 million to help make up for losses in other areas.
