Hungary's Fazekas to compete in Beijing

ASSOCIATED PRESS

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Hungarian discus thrower Robert Fazekas, who was stripped of his gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics for doping, will compete at the Beijing Games.

Hungary's Olympic Committee said it approved Fazekas' request Thursday after the athlete met the Olympic qualifying standard at a competition in Slovenia earlier this week.

Fazekas, his coach, his doctor and athletics officials guaranteed in writing that the discus thrower did not commit any doping offenses during training or the games, the committee said.

Fazekas was one of five Hungarian athletes who failed doping tests at the Athens Olympics, including winners of two golds and a silver medal. Fazekas served a two-year ban.
