In a fit of creative brilliance and originality Hank Wesch has chosen “change” as the byword for his '08 Del Mar fantasy betting campaign. Change from the widely misperceived “trend” of nine losing seasons (some narrow) in 10 years at the gig. Or, failing that, a few bucks and change remaining at the end of the meeting from the original imaginary $2,000 stake. No change in the format. One selection on semi-serious handicapping, one on pure hunch.
Handicap: Tyler Baze is the only rider in the brief careers of our two Debutante favorites, Empressive Lady and Evita Argentina. And he chose Empressive Lady ($30W) for the race. Plus a $3 tri key with Empressive Lady to win over Evita Argentina, Stardom Bound and Trifecta King.
Hunch: On Labor Day we acknowledge the Enactment (8th, $30W) of labor laws and the formation of unions, which made for the rise of the middle class, which made America great. We're not nearly as enamored with the local amendment to the laws our bosses keep citing which sets the ceiling for a turf writer at $1.50 above minimum wage.
Yesterday's Handicap: Gio Ponti (9th, $30W) had a wide trip and came up a half-length short of victory as the 4-5 favorite. The $2 tri key with Gio Ponti to win over Sky Cape, Tizwest and Kilderry was demolished by the loss.
Yesterday's Hunch: What's Important (8th, $10W) pulled up and was vanned off and Ready to Roll ($10P) was nowhere. The $5EBX of What's Important and Ready to Roll is already forgotten.
Yesterday's loss: $72. Bankroll: $2717.70.
